Contemporary perspectives on domestic space in the countries of the former communist bloc are deeply connected to both the political legacy and past mentalities, as well as to the economic, legislative, and technological aspects of the present. While the domestic space is often associated with safety, comfort, and rest, it can simultaneously represent precarity, vulnerability, insecurity, and unease in the context of a polarized society, which includes various vulnerable groups and conflicting mentalities.
The roundtable, organized in the context of the Domestic exhibition, aims to contextualize contemporary visions of domesticity, both through artistic practices and transdisciplinary approaches related to architecture, gender policies, and sociology. The debate seeks to question the norms of domesticity, reexamine the concept from the perspective of limits, boundaries, and control, and critically reflect on the material and immaterial roles of domesticity in contemporary society.
The artistic projects featured in this visual and conceptual debate are created by: Gabriela MATEESCU (RO), Iulia STĂTICĂ & Adrian CÂTU (UK-RO), Sandra STERLE (HR), Patricia TEODORESCU (RO), Ivana TODOROVIC (SR), and Iulia TOMA (RO). Three of the six video works are newly commissioned to artistically explore the historical and social themes of this initiative.
The project also develops a platform for debates on women’s rights and domestic or social abuse—issues that persist but are too rarely addressed in the public space.
